These few examples make it clear that change management cannot be delivered?in one recipe.
However with change management literature drawing so few case studies from African contexts, it is hard to challenge current change management techniques and tools.

Yet little of that has been influencing management education in Africa. Most change literature locally available is Western-centric or imported.

That is far from being sure!
As a matter of fact, most African countries are new actors in the global economy. For very long they were conducting business and running organizations with a rationale that had nothing to do with that of the market economy.
With the influx of foreign direct investments, Africans are willing to fill the education gap: developing competences, skills and knowledge has become their priority to compete in the global economy. With no indigenous model of change being openly acknowledged, they entirely rely on foreign literature and on foreign models of references.
They often blindly take any foreign skills training programs proposed by local or foreign organizations. American training products are especially valued. Confronted with the challenge to implement these foreign recipe they find no other reason that their incompetence for explaining their failure. Yet admitting the failure openly would just challenge their status and therefore they rather keep quiet. Ineffective change approaches and techniques will continue to be taught and developed as long as culture will not take a bigger place into business and change management education.

I came across an article on BusinessWeek.com that I just have to write about because it asserts that GM has achieved a business model innovation by shunting its retiree medical obligations onto the Union (and getting away with only contributing 70% of the outstanding obligations to the fund).
This is not a business model innovation, but purely a negotiation outcome and nothing that will give GM any sustainable competitive advantage. Ford and Chrysler will end up doing the same thing and the parity of competition amongst US manufacturers will be restored. A business model innovation is Southwest Airlines establishing a new airline focused on providing low fare point to point air travel instead of creating another airline based on a hub and spoke model, or Saturn selling their cars for a fixed price, not GM pushing obligations off their balance sheet.
GM is not losing in the automobile industry because of health care costs for retirees. They are losing because their operations result in cars that less and less people want to buy. GM needs to stop complaining about peripheral issues and trying to be like Toyota and instead focus on how they can be better than Toyota.
When workers come back on the job, nothing will have changed in their business, the business of designing, manufacturing and selling cars. If anything the workers are going to come back to work feeling like they have just given even more away to the corporation, just so that the CEO?s balance sheet look better. This is not a business model innovation. The Big Three will not avoid the inevitable by simply squeezing their union workforce, they need to design and manufacture better cars. This deal with the unions may slow the inevitable, but not avoid it. Toyota is passing GM, the Korean manufacturers are quickly improving their quality, and the Chinese will begin entering the US market in the next few years. One of the Big Three will go out of business in the next ten years. The real question is which one?

The word "illegals" also was used in December by The New York Times' Bill Keller and it stirred controversy then.
The New York Times crossword editor, Will Shortz, told Univision's Juan Gastelum that he wasn't aware it was an offensive term.
I guess Shortz doesn't read his own newspaper that carefully.
These are times of growing diversity and demographic change in this country. We shouldn't diminish that with name calling. Journalists also should know the weight their words carry.

The Nintendo Wii U had its big unveil in June, 2011, at E3.? The new Nintendo system is expected to be released for the Christmas 2012 shopping season.? So, if the world doesn?t end, you could be unwrapping one of these under the tree come Christmas morning.
Currently, the next generation Xbox console is generating more speculation and rumor than confirmed specs.? On the specs side, rumors have involved Xbox incorporating a touchscreen into its remote control, augmented reality, a BluRay player, enhanced Kinect tracking skills, and a central processor that would permit 3D display. ?Other rumors have included the name of the system being Xbox 720 and the potential of a lock-out that would prohibit people from playing used games. ?What seems to be more reliable are the predictions that the next-gen Xbox will premiere at this summer?s E3 and that it will most likely rollout in Fall 2013 for that shopping season.
With Wii U confirmed to have a touchscreen remote, and Xbox next-gen rumored to have one, it?s hard not to think that Sony may be considering something similar, given that their new portable, the Vita, has a touchscreen.? Thus far, of the three next-gen consoles, less is known about what Sony is releasing, although people have been dubbing it PlayStation 4.? Speculation may be common for the year as Sony has announced they will not be giving a presentation on a new console at this year?s E3.
Most likely a new PlayStation would feature advances in processors to continue the trend for realistic graphics and 3D display that Sony has been developing.? As to when it may be released?well, seeing as PlayStation wants to further develop the still profitable PS3 (such as with the aforementioned expansion of 3D display) and seek to have their console on a 10 year life cycle of use, and that they recently rolled out the Vita, it may be that they are not too eager to compete head-to-head with Microsoft and would instead wait to see what Microsoft unveils for their next-gen before revealing more of their plans.
Of the current 7th gen systems, although it peaked and sales have been dropping, Nintendo still retains global market dominance, with Microsoft and PlayStation at a comparable equal level.? Nintendo?s Wii targets younger and more casual players, while PlayStation and Microsoft both compete for more hardcore gamers, teenagers and up.? With Wii U, Nintendo is on track to maintain their focus on their specific segment of the marketplace.
Could Sony cede their marketshare of hardcore gaming to Microsoft in order to focus on the success of their portables, which Microsoft has not been able to match? ?While doubtful, it would would leave Nintendo to continue to capitalize on the casual gamers market, which has been increasing in recent years?but that increase has been fueled by the rise of social games on Facebook and mobile gaming apps on tablets and smartphones; an increase that has led Nintendo to develop the tablet-esque controller for the Wii U. Meanwhile, Sony and Microsoft face competition from MMORPGs.
It may be that the eighth?generation of video games already upon us. ?Processors have gotten so small and so fast that they haven given rise to portable gaming. ?Meanwhile, bandwidth has gotten strong enough to accommodate faster and more realistic synchronous multiplayer online gameplay. All of this leaves console gaming in a position that the arcades of the 1980s were when the consoles arose: facing stiff competition from new technology introducing new ways of playing digital games.
The question is, will video game consoles go the route of the arcade, or will they find a way to adapt and retain their relevance as external units hooked up to our television sets?

The major supermarkets are claiming they have an on-going commitment to selling alcohol responsibly by adopting new displays to help shoppers understand how many units of alcohol are in their drinks.
All of the main food retailers will use a common set of posters and shelf-labels to educate consumers about the units in a typical bottle or can of lager, glass of wine and single measure of spirit.
The scheme, backed by the British Retail Consortium (BRC), has been set up in association with the Wine and Spirit Trade Association (WSTA) and the Department of Health as part of the Public Health Responsibility Deal.
The images are appearing in shops from this month and are also being trialled in pubs and clubs.
They are said to be just the latest in a string of initiatives retailers have adopted to reduce the risk of alcohol-related harm.
The retail sector already provides funding for DrinkAware and introduced unit labelling on own-brand products in 2007.
BRC food director Andrew Opie said:??Our retailers have led the way on responsible drinking.
?They were the first to adopt unit labelling on their own products and pioneered Challenge 25 to prevent under-age sales.

It's not often that a company announced it lost 17,000 customers in a quarter and that's considered good news, but for Comcast that's exactly the case when it comes to cable TV. Manufacturer HTC today on its Facebook page gave word that its initial round of Ice Cream Sandwich updates will be available by the end of March. First up are the HTC Sensation, Sensation 4G and Sensation XE, with the Sensation XL to follow. (Note to HTC: Got enough versions there?)
That's just for starters, of course. Back in November, HTC told us that the Rezound, EVO 3D and EVO Design 4G also would receive updates as well. And today, HTC has added the Vivid, Incredible S, Desire S and Desire HD to the update list. There's no word on when they'll be updated (other than "later this year"), but it's certainly a good start.
