Running a business ? any business ? can be very stressful at times. Between managing employees, keeping customers happy, and trying to pay the bills, there is plenty for a business owner to worry about on a daily basis. Home staging is certainly no exception ? stress is a fact of life. But while it?s normal to experience stress from time to time, when stress becomes constant and debilitating, you have a serious problem. If you?re too stressed out to function effectively, let alone make the right decisions for the future, your business is at serious risk.

If you can identify with any of these feelings, here?s a solution that works for many people. Focus on doing your best? and forget the rest. Now what does that really mean? It means acknowledging there are certain factors beyond your control, and stressing about those factors is literally a pointless waste of time and energy. When you learn to differentiate between the factors you can control and those you can?t, it becomes much easier to focus your energies and avoid stress.

Now, it is vital that you don?t take this philosophy too far. Don?t start to categorize things that you CAN control as things that are beyond your control. For instance, let?s say you?re launching a direct mail campaign. What CAN?T you control? Ultimately, you can?t make the recipients pick up the phone and call you. But you can control a whole lot of important details, such as?

• Targeting the right audience.
• Creating a visually effective mailing.
• Choosing an appealing offer.
• Timing the mailing properly.
• Proofreading, etc.

In this example, there are a variety of details that you must worry about. (This is the ?Do your best? portion of the equation.) But ultimately, once you?ve done your due diligence, you have to sit back and wait for the phone to ring. At this point, stressing about your response rate and second-guessing your decisions is unproductive? and you shouldn?t do it! (?Forget the rest!?)

So how can you apply this philosophy to your life as a home staging professional? By breaking down? goals into short-term action items?so you can do the work that must be done, without worrying about the ?big picture? outcome. For instance, assume that one of your long-term goals is to boost your revenue to $50,000 annually. Rather than spending your day aimlessly hoping your business will grow, or even worse, becoming stressed about the LACK of growth, make a plan. Identify the factors? you can control, and set to work performing each of them to the best of your ability. Once you?ve done all that you can do, sit back, relax, and trust that you will reap the benefits of your hard work !

Stress can be debilitating for a small business owner. It?s important to learn to keep stress to a minimum in order to run your home staging business effectively. So the next time you feel stress creeping into your day, remember? do your best, and forget the rest!

LONDON (AP) -Premier League referee Mark Halsey has asked police to investigate abusive comments about him on Twitter after officiating in the heated match between Liverpool and Manchester United.

The insulting online messages on Monday referenced Halsey's battle with throat cancer in 2009.

Halsey made two contentious decisions in United's 2-1 victory at Anfield on Sunday that went in favor of the visitors.

Liverpool midfielder Jonjo Shelvey was sent off in the first half for a challenge on Jonny Evans, and United was later awarded a penalty kick that was scored by Robin van Persie.

Halsey returned to refereeing in March 2010 following his cancer battle.

No Premier League referees have Twitter accounts, according to the body that oversees match officials in England.

Subsidized Loan vs Unsubsidized Loan - Difference and - Diffen

Federal Direct Stafford Loans are low-interest loans that help students finance their postsecondary education by covering the cost of attendance. Subsidized loans offer better terms than unsubsidized loans and are available to undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need. For subsidized loans, the U.S. Department of Education pays the interest while the student is enrolled at least half-time in school.

Subsidized and Unsubsidized loans refer to Federal Direct Stafford Loans. There are two broad types of student loans:

• Private student loan ? Loans by a lender such as a bank, credit union, state agency, or a school.
• Federal student loan ? Funded by federal government. Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) should be completed to avail or to check eligibility.
  • Federal Perkins loan - low-interest federal student loans for undergraduate and graduate students with exceptional financial need
  • Federal Direct Stafford Loans
    • Direct subsidized loan ? low-interest federal student loans for undergraduate students with financial need
    • Direct unsubsidized loan ? low-interest federal student loans for undergraduate and graduate students

A subsidized Federal Direct Stafford Loan is based on financial need. It is only available to undergraduate students. The advantage of a subsidized loan is that federal government -- not the student -- pays the interest for the student during the following periods:

• While the student is enrolled in school at least half time
• During the six-month grace period after the student graduates, leaves school or drops below half-time enrollment
• During a period of deferment (a period when payments of principal are temporarily postponed)

An unsubsidized loan is available to all eligible students, whether graduate or undergraduate. There is no requirement to demonstrate financial need. The student is responsible to paying the interest on the loan throughout the life of the loan. However, if the student does not wish to service the loan while in school, the accrued interest is capitalized i.e. added to the outstanding principal.

Eligibility criteria for Federal Direct Stafford Loans, whether subsidized or unsubsidized, include:

• U.S. citizens or eligible noncitizens
• Enrolled or accepted for enrollment on at least a half-time basis in an eligible program at an eligible school
• Registered with the U.S. Selective Service System (for males not exempt from registration)

In addition, qualification for subsidized loans requires the student to demonstrate ongoing financial need. Financial need is the difference between Cost of Attendance (COA) of a school and the Expected Family Contribution (EFC). After July 1, 2012, unsubsidized loans are no longer available to graduate students; they are for undergraduate students only.

As explained in the overview, subsidized loans offer the advantage that the government pays the interest while the student is in school.

Each loan also has a grace period of six months. This is a period of time after borrowers graduate, leave school, or drop below half-time enrollment where they are not required to make payments on their federal student loans. Interest will accrue on subsidized loans made between July 1, 2012 and July 1, 2014, and all unsubsidized loans during grace periods. If the interest is not paid, it will be added to the principal balance of the loan when the repayment period begins.

In addition, Federal Direct loans also include a provision for deferment. Deferment is a postponement of payment on a loan that is allowed under certain conditions and during which interest does not accrue for subsidized loans. Unsubsidized loans that are deferred will continue to accrue interest and any accrued unpaid interest will be added to the principal balance (capitalized) of the loan at the end of the deferment period.

The interest rates for the loans first disbursed between July 1, 2012 and July 30, 2013 are as follows:

In both unsubsidized and subsidized loans, the amount depends upon the Cost of Attendance. For subsidized loans, the student can only borrow up to an amount equal to the difference between the cost of attendance (COA) and the expected family contribution (EFC).

The loan fees for federal student loans are:

• 1% for Direct Subsidized Loans and Direct Unsubsidized Loans
• 4% for Direct PLUS Loans

Perkins Loans do not have fees. Loan fees are deducted proportionately from each disbursement. This results in the actual amount received being less than the actual borrowed amount. The actual amount borrowed has to be repaid.

To apply for a Direct Loan, you must first complete and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSASM). Your school will use the information from your FAFSA to determine how much student aid you are eligible to receive. Direct Loans are generally included as part of your financial aid package.

India government regains its muscle with reforms

NEW DELHI (AP) ? Manmohan Singh's coalition has splintered and his government is fighting for survival. But the Indian prime minister, who has been criticized for presiding meekly over a corrupt government, is suddenly being hailed as a bold, powerful leader.

Since pushing through a battery of unexpected economic reforms last week, and refusing to back down in the face of protests and political threats, Singh appeared to have rejuvenated a government thought hopelessly paralyzed.

In a rare primetime address Friday, Singh said he needed to take strong action before the world lost faith in India's economy.

"We have much to do to protect the interests of our nation, and we must do it now. At times, we need to say 'No' to the easy option and say 'Yes' to the more difficult one. This happens to be one such occasion. The time has come for hard decisions," he said.

Singh accused his critics of spreading false information and said he was working to restore high economic growth to India.

A day after a national strike against his program ? which included cutting fuel subsidies and letting in foreign retailers ? Singh got a political breather Friday when a regional party opposed to the reforms said it would continue to support the government from outside the coalition.

The turnaround for the soft-spoken 79-year-old economist has been shocking.

"He made up his mind that he's going to push through his economic reforms agenda, even if it means he was going to lose power," said Dileep Padgaonkar, a veteran journalist and political analyst.

Padgaonkar said Singh was looking to rescue his legacy and reclaim the glow of his most famous achievement two decades ago when as finance minister he led wholesale reforms widely credited with sparking India's economic rise.

In the past few years, his government was battered by scandals, including the irregular sales of cellphone spectrum and coal blocks that India's auditor said cost the country's treasury tens of billions. The opposition protested by paralyzing Parliament, making it impossible for the government to pass many bills. Bureaucrats, fearing they would get caught up in the next scandal, stopped making decisions, freezing business.

The Trinamool Congress, an important coalition partner, regularly blocked decisions. Its leader, Mamata Banerjee, torpedoed an about-to-be-signed water treaty with Bangladesh and fired the national railway minister, who was from her party, when he presented a budget including the first fare increases in nearly a decade.

A low point came last year when the government decided to allow foreign retail chains to come into the country ? and then suspended the decision two weeks later after Banerjee protested.

Meanwhile, India's economy, which officials had hoped would hit double-digit growth, was sputtering. The rupee had plunged in value and the country's huge deficit was putting it under threat of a possible ratings downgrade.

Last week, Singh's government responded. It cut the subsidy on diesel fuel by 5 rupees (10 cents) a liter and placed limits on cooking gas subsidies. It agreed to let in foreign retailers, such as Wal-Mart, loosened rules on foreign investment in airlines and TV and agreed to sell off stakes in four state owned companies.

The Indian Express newspaper said in an editorial the reforms were not likely to have much immediate impact but "they are a crucial statement of intent."

The moves sparked outrage from opponents who fear Indian jobs will be lost if large U.S. and European retailers enter the market.

"(Singh) is out to destroy the interests of small traders and farmers," said Sitaram Yechuri, a lawmaker from the communist party.

Jai Prakash, a student at a protest in New Delhi, said the economic package showed "politicians are not bothered about the welfare of millions of poor people."

Banerjee demanded an immediate rollback or she would pull out of the coalition. The government ignored the threat, setting the decisions into law Thursday. Her party left the government Friday.

In his televised address, Singh said the government feared that if it did not cut fuel subsidies its ballooning deficit would plunge the country into a financial crisis similar to Europe's and reminiscent of the one that sparked India's first wave of reforms two decades ago.

"I know what happened in 1991, and I would be failing in my duty as prime minister of this great country if I did not take strong preventive action. The world is not kind to those who do not tackle their own problems," he said.

Foreign retailers would create millions of jobs, lower prices for consumers and, because they are required to put half their investments into backend infrastructure, help farmers keep their crops from rotting, he said. India's current network of small retailers will continue to grow alongside the foreign giants as the economy expands, he said.

"The fear that small retailers will be wiped out is completely baseless," he said."

Singh's new reforms have been compared with his support for a U.S.-Indian nuclear deal that ended the country's nuclear isolation but nearly brought down his government in 2008, near the end of his first term.

Though Singh now presides over a minority government, he maintains the support of two parties outside the coalition.

And it is likely that without the mercurial Banerjee the government might go further, possibly opening up the insurance sector to more outside investment, reducing sugar subsidies for the poor and reforming the banking and electricity industries.

The government is "on its front foot for the first time in two years," said Andrew Holland, chief executive of investment advisory at Mumbai's Ambit Capital.

Already Friday, it enacted tax breaks to lower the cost of overseas borrowing for Indian companies and encourage small, first-time individual investors to buy Indian equities. The measures, announced in the annual budget in March, added to reform momentum and helped send the benchmark Sensex index up 2.2 percent, to close at a 52-week high of 18,752.83.

At the same time, the government has sought to lighten the burden on the poor with a tax cut for cooking gas, and media reports said it planned to release 10 million tons of stored grain into the market to bring down food prices.

Zoya Hasan, a political analyst with New Delhi's Jawarhalal Nehru University, said she might not agree with what Singh has done, but he has made himself into India's most influential prime minister since its founding leader, Nehru.

"(He) has brought about a huge change," she said.

The union decided to keep working past a midnight Monday strike deadline after reaching a deal with Ford and extending its contracts with GM and Chrysler.

Workers stayed on the job as talks continued, but the union warned it could go on strike after giving GM and Chrysler 24 hours' notice. They wanted the Ford contract to serve as a template for the other two companies.

Like the Ford deal, the GM agreement cuts wages for new hires and freezes pay for current workers. But it also gives them lump-sum payments to cover inflation and for ratifying the deal.

Under the Ford and GM deals, the companies will pay new workers 60 percent of the current top wage of $33.89 Canadian dollars ($34.74) an hour, according to the CAW. That would mean new workers would be paid around $20.33 Canadian ($20.84). They can move up the wage scale and reach the top wage in 10 years.

"We're avoiding a permanent two-tier wage system which was the stumbling block today," Lewenza said.

U.S. workers at the Detroit automakers approved a similar two-tier wage agreement five years ago, but in those agreements, workers don't automatically get the top wage after 10 years.

Lewenza said Chrysler hasn't agreed to the pattern set by Ford.

"As long as we're making progress there is no need to pull the trigger," Lewenza said of the possibility of putting Chrysler on 24-hour strike notice. "The trigger is the last tool in the tool box."

Canadian Ford auto workers will vote this weekend on the tentative agreement and the union said results of the vote will be released Sunday night. There was no immediate word when GM workers would vote on their deal.

The auto companies say Canada is the most expensive place in the world to make cars and trucks, and they could move production south if the CAW doesn't cut costs. The CAW represents about 21,000 auto workers in Canada and about 16 percent of auto production in North America.

"This set of talks with our labor partner have been candid and constructive, reflecting the challenges facing Canadian manufacturers," GM said in a statement.

GM and Chrysler make popular models in Canada that would soon be in short supply if a strike occurred. CAW workers also make key engine parts and other components for U.S.-built cars. In Canada, GM makes the Chevrolet Camaro, Impala and Equinox, along with the Buick Regal, Cadillac XTS and GMC Terrain. Chrysler makes minivans and the Dodge Challenger and Charger, Chrysler 300, and Ram Cargo Van in Canada.

Canada's advantages in the past ? a weak Canadian dollar and government health care ? have all but vanished compared with U.S. factories. In addition, the United Auto Workers union in the U.S. has agreed to steeper concessions than the CAW, making U.S. labor costs cheaper. Going into the talks, the Detroit automakers were paying an estimated $60 to $62 an hour for labor and benefits in Canada, compared with $50 an hour at Chrysler, $56 at Ford and $58 at GM, according to the Center for Automotive Research, a nonprofit research group.

The federal Canadian and Ontario province governments worked in tandem with the U.S. government on auto bailouts in 2009 to maintain Canada's share of North American auto production. Canada's share peaked at 3.2 million cars in 1999, about 17.4 percent of North American production. In 2011, Canada produced 2.1 million vehicles, or about 16 percent.

Germany's big worry: China, not Greece

BERLIN (Reuters) - Berlin, not Brussels, will decide the future of the ailing eurozone because Germany's economic power and its status as the European Union's main paymaster give it an effective veto over key decisions.

So it comes as a surprise to find that in Berlin's corridors of power, the main worry is not whether Greece sticks to its reform pledges or Spain demands an EU bailout.

As the world's third largest exporting nation, Germans are far more concerned about whether China loses its appetite for their machine tools and cars, or about what the famed Teutonic manufacturers should make in the year 2030.

Dominating the stage in Germany is the towering political presence of Chancellor Angela Merkel. Just over a year before federal elections, she looks unbeatable.

Opinion polls show her CDU/CSU party winning between 35-39 percent, well ahead of the next biggest grouping, the opposition Social Democrats on 26-30 percent. The opposition Greens are in third place on 12-15 percent, with three smaller parties splitting the remainder.

Coalitions are the norm in Germany so it is mathematically possible to imagine a combination of parties which could unseat the Chancellor next year. But few people expect this. "Quite honestly I don't see any risks for Merkel inside Germany," one senior opposition politician commented. "She is very strong and highly trusted by the population as a crisis manager."

Ranked by Forbes as the world's most powerful woman, Merkel has ruled since 2005 through a canny mixture of political maneuvering, ruthlessness, determination and a good feel for the concerns of the ordinary German.

Her reluctance to embrace bold, comprehensive solutions to the eurozone crisis from the outset has exasperated some foreign critics. But at home, it chimes well with the national predilection for cautiousness, deliberation, thrift and hard work.

"Southern European countries face a situation like the one I had at school," said one senior government official. "I went to a good school and unfortunately I found that other students were cleverer than me in certain subjects, so I had to work harder. I could have gone to a different school but I wanted to stay at that school, so I worked harder."

TO THE BRINK

Merkel took the eurozone close to the brink earlier this year by blocking proposals for European governments to jointly guarantee government borrowing and bank deposits. But she calmed markets in recent weeks by dropping her opposition to the European Central Bank buying the debt of vulnerable southern European governments to lower borrowing costs, provided those nations agree to reform their economies.

"What we're now saying is that if you're drowning, we'll throw you a lifebelt but we'll only pull you out of the water if you start to make visible swimming movements," said Michael Naumann, a former SPD minister, publisher and editor.

Such "conditional solidarity" with Germany's neighbors appeals to a public who are suspicious of the final bill for a eurozone rescue. Germans do not want their hard-fought economic prowess jeopardized by what they regard as irresponsible, free-spending neighbors who failed to embrace necessary economic reform as Germany did earlier this century.

"The key to Merkel's success is the way she portrays herself as the defender of the German taxpayer, only reluctantly going along with Eurozone rescue deals and doing so at the last minute under duress," said one ambassador in Berlin.

While other European countries still debate whether Greece should be allowed to stay in the eurozone after failing to meet targets to cut public spending, privatize state assets and open up its economy, officials in Berlin say Germany has already quietly decided to let Athens remain.

"Chancellor Merkel was much more interested in throwing Greece out six months ago, but not now, even though their credibility is close to zero", one official said. "If you want to know why, look at North Africa and the eastern Mediterranean. With all that's going on there, who wants a NATO member on the southeastern border of the EU to turn into a failed state ?"

EUROPE FIRST

In any case, there is little political opposition to Merkel's Europe policy in a country where strong pro-Europeanism is an article of political faith. "I can't imagine that a coalition between the SPD (Social Democrats) and the Greens would actually do anything differently to her," said a second ambassador. "All the main parties support her strategy."

That includes the German Greens. Foreign observers who remember the unkempt, anti-establishment Bonn radicals of the 1980s may be surprised to meet today's sharp-suited, smooth-talking Green leadership, who project a keen interest in power, rather than protest.

The radical baton has instead passed to Die Linke, the successors to the East German Communist Party and Germany's hardest left. "Mrs Merkel is so popular because with the exception of Die Linke, there are practically no alternatives to her," said Sahra Wagenknecht, the elegantly attired deputy leader of the party, who bears more than a passing resemblance to German revolutionary Rosa Luxemburg.

"The SPD runs faithfully after her and nods through her ideas...Merkel's Europe policy is not questioned at all by anyone apart from us."

Wagenknecht opposes the eurozone bailout because she says it has benefited bankers and the rich disproportionately and hurt the poor and the unemployed. But her party bumps along at around four percent in polls, a result she blames on a prolonged bout of in-fighting. Others say Germany is simply too prosperous for a hard-left party to flourish.

Senior Social Democrats have a different problem: Merkel keeps adopting their best ideas.

"She has stolen practically 80 percent of our political program," muttered one well-connected SPD supporter, noting Merkel's abrupt U-turn last year announcing an end to nuclear power. "She has no ideas or principles of her own and is only interested in power. She is destroying party politics in this country."

With so much consensus among the country's political elite over the need for Germany to rescue less fortunate members of the eurozone, the harshest criticism of Merkel's policy on Europe has come from outside parliament: the conservative media, members of the public and the country's revered central bank, the Bundesbank.

Moritz Schuller, who edits the opinion page for the capital's daily newspaper Der Tagesspiegel, is among those critical voices. "We are following an ideological project," he said. "We sold the Greeks Mercedes cars and Bosch fridges which they bought with money they didn't have."

"Now we are making the same mistakes with Greece that we made with East Germany during unification. We are pouring money into a system which doesn't function."

"East Germany didn't become an economic powerhouse because of our ?Marshall Plan'. People left and went west in search of jobs instead. Compare that with Poland: they succeeded because they had 10 years of pain where they let companies go bust and joblessness rise, while they restructured."

Outside Germany, the most commonly heard complaint about the Chancellor is a different one: Merkel is too cautious and hesitant in her moves to solve the Eurozone crisis. "Why can't she show more leadership ?" is a cry often heard in southern Europe or Brussels.

Viewed from Berlin, things look different.

"Translate ?leadership' into German and what do you get ?" asked one senior politician here. "Fuehrung. People round here have learned that you have to be careful with Fuehrers".

The biggest risk on the horizon for Merkel is economic, rather than political. Germany's economy is slowing down and the OECD predicts it faces a mild recession. Again, though, nobody expects a tough economic climate unless China catches a cold or another external calamity occurs.

The German Industry Federation has just surveyed its constituent members - operating at a healthy 84 percent of capacity -- and found none expects a sharp slowdown. But industrialists do worry about the yawning imbalances between the prosperous north of the eurozone and its debt-ridden, crisis-prone south.

"A monetary union needs a minimum degree of homogeneity," said one industrial leader. "If other countries don't want a large tradeable sector with plenty of manufactured goods, the eurozone is not sustainable." Southern Europe, he suggested, might want to try using its unwanted properties built during the boom years for medical treatment, and develop an industry treating patients better and more cost-effectively than elsewhere.

Others in Berlin worry about the eurozone's endless ability to spring unpleasant surprises.

"At the moment the bloc is like a group of skittles," one senior government official said. "Some are unstable and there is a danger that one falls over and knocks others down with it. But we don't know which one it will be. It could be the Greek skittle or the Italian one or the Spanish one. Or there could be a skittle flying in from the outside such as a Chinese one."

But all in all, there are no major worries at home, where political stability, economic prosperity and one of the world's highest standards of living survive largely intact, even as other parts of Europe teeter on the edge of the abyss.

So with such a benign domestic political and economic landscape, is Germany celebrating? Unbridled joy does not come easily to the Berlin elite. "It is not true that we have no problems," said one minister. "We are one of the fastest-ageing countries in the world and from 2020 onwards we face a difficult situation in this respect."

That's a problem the Greeks can only dream of having.

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's general prosecutor issued arrest warrants Tuesday for seven Egyptian Coptic Christians and a Florida-based American pastor and referred them to trial on charges linked to an anti-Islam film that has sparked riots across the Muslim world.

The case is largely symbolic since the seven men and one woman are believed to be outside of Egypt and unlikely to travel to the country to face the charges. Instead, the prosecutor's decision to take legal appears aimed at absorbing at least some of the public anger over the amateur film, which portrays the Prophet Muhammad as a fraud, womanizer and buffoon.

The prosecutor's office said in a statement that the accused, which includes the film's alleged producer, face charges of harming national unity, insulting and publicly attacking Islam and spreading false information. The office said they could face the death penalty, if convicted. No date for the trial has been set.

Among those charged is Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, an Egyptian Copt living in southern California and believed to be behind the film. Florida-based Pastor Terry Jones, who has said he was contacted by the filmmaker to promote the video, as well as Morris Sadek, a conservative Coptic Christian in the U.S. who pushed the video on his website, are also among those charged.

The connection of the other five accused in the case to the film was not immediately clear.

Ultraconservative Salafi lawyer Mamdouh Ismail praised the prosecutor's decision. While recognizing that the eight will be tried in absentia, Ismail said referring them to trial will help curb public anger.

"Now these are legal measures instead of angry reactions, whose consequences are undetermined," he said. "This would also set a deterrent for them and anyone else who may fall into this" offense.

The prosecutor's statement, a copy of which was obtained by The Associated Press, said that after studying the film investigators have determined that it contains scenes offensive to Islam and state institutions. It also says they questioned 10 plaintiffs before issuing the charges.

Nakoula, 55, told the AP in an interview last week outside Los Angeles that he was the manager of the company that produced "Innocence of Muslims." Jones also told AP that he was contacted by Nakoula to promote the movie.

The film, clips of it appeared on YouTube, mocked the Prophet Muhammad and drove small but angry crowds to protest outside the U.S. Embassy in Egypt and an attack on the American Consulate in Libya that killed the U.S. ambassador. Other protests have erupted across the Muslim world over the video, including Afghanistan, Yemen and Indonesia.

Spacetime ripples from dying black holes could help reveal how they formed

Researchers from Cardiff University have discovered a new property of black holes: their dying tones could reveal the cosmic crash that produced them.

Black holes are regions of space where gravity is so strong that not even light can escape and so isolated black holes are truly dark objects and don't emit any form of radiation.

However, black holes that get deformed, because of other black holes or stars crashing into them, are known to emit a new sort of radiation, called gravitational waves, which Einstein predicted nearly a hundred years ago.

Gravitational waves are ripples in the fabric of spacetime that travel at the speed of light but they are extremely difficult to detect.

Kilometer-sized laser interferometers are being built in the US, Europe, Japan and India, to detect these waves from colliding black holes and other cosmic events. They are sensitive to gravitational waves in roughly the same frequency range as audible sound waves, and can be thought of as a microphone to gravitational waves.

Two black holes orbiting around each other emit gravitational waves and lose energy; eventually they come together and collide to produce a black hole that is initially highly deformed. Gravitational waves from a deformed black hole come out not in one tone but in a mixture of a number of different tones, very much like the dying tones of a ringing bell.

In the case of black holes, the frequency of each tone and rate at which the tones decay depend only on the two parameters that characterize a black hole: its mass and how rapidly it spins.

Therefore scientists have long believed that by detecting the spacetime ripples of a black hole and measuring their frequencies one can measure the mass and spin of a black hole without going anywhere near it.

Ioannis Kamaretsos, Mark Hannam and B. Sathyaprakash of Cardiff University used Cardiff's powerful ARCCA cluster to perform a large number of computer simulations of a pair of black holes crashing against each other, and found that the different tones of a ringing black hole can actually tell us much more.

The team's findings will appear in the Physical Review Letters.

"By comparing the strengths of the different tones, it is possible not only to learn about the final black hole, but also the properties of the original two black holes that took part in the collision," explained Ioannis Kamaretsos, who performed the simulations as part of his PhD research.

He added, "It is exciting that the details of the late inspiral and merger are imprinted on the waves from the deformed final black hole. If General Relativity is correct, we may be able to make clear how very massive black holes in the centres of galaxies have shaped galactic evolution.

We never guessed it would be possible to weigh two black holes after they've collided and merged," said Dr Mark Hannam.

"We might even be able to use these results to test Einstein's general theory of relativity. We can compare the waves we observe from the orbiting black holes with the waves from the merged black hole, and check whether they are consistent," he added.

Professor B Sathyaprakash, who has spent his whole career studying gravitational waves commented: "It is quite remarkable. As in any new research, our finding opens up new questions: how accurately can we measure the parameters of the progenitor binary, whether our results hold good for more generic systems where initial black hole spins are arbitrarily oriented, etc. We will be addressing these questions in the coming years.

"Advanced gravitational wave detectors that are currently being built will provide us an opportunity to test our predictions in the coming decade."

Their research opens up a new avenue for studying the properties of the binary that produced the final black hole even when the binary itself is not visible to a gravitational wave detector. Future gravitational wave detectors should be able to study black holes far heavier than what was thought possible before and hence enhance their science reach.
