Michele Bachmann Drops Out of Presidential Race

Republican Presidential candidate Michele Bachmann formally ended her campaign for the White House this morning, just one day after Mitt Romney's Iowa caucus victory.

"Last night, the people of Iowa spoke with a very clear voice. And I have decided to stand aside," the GOP Congresswoman from Minnesota told reporters today.

They spoke, indeed, dealing her a disappointing sixth-place finish.

The Queen of Rage could not become The Queen of Votes.

Despite Bachmann's extensive tour to visit all 99 of Iowa's counties, her August straw poll win, and the state being her place of birth, she garnered just five percent.

Her communications director Alice Stewart told reporters following the news conference that conversations began last night about whether to continue the campaign.

The congresswoman asked for time to "sleep on it" and "pray about it." Stewart said she was awoken early Wednesday morning with the news that Michele was out.

Bachmann has not yet discussed whether she will seek reelection to her U.S. House seat in Minnesota, Stewart said, or whether she will endorse another candidate.

Also unclear if last night's second-place finisher will reach out to her supporters with the following tagline: Rick Santorum: Conservative Like Bachmann, But Less Crazy!

New Mexico man, 85, facing bigamy charge

LAS VEGAS, N.M. (AP) - A Las Vegas man is facing a charge of bigamy after state police say they obtained evidence that he was not legally divorced from his first wife.

85-year-old Joe Olivas was arrested Tuesday.

He was booked on a single count of fourth-degree felony bigamy.

According to a statement of probable cause, Olivas admitted to being aware that he was married to two women because he "was lonely" after more than two years apart from his wife.

Of course, we don't actually have a democracy in the U.S. (despite the rhetoric, we've never had more than a representative republic, except occasionally on very local scales). But we do have enough of the bad characteristics of democratic systems influencing our government that Plato's critique probably applies. And one could make an argument that the U.S. has been moving its way through the progression of Plato's theory of government degeneration: "aristocracy" (learned founders, who designed a system that was based on successive levels of disconnect from democratic opinion --who could vote was limited, Senate was elected by legislatures, President was elected by a "college" of electors, etc.), then "timocracy" (expansionist phase in the U.S.), "oligarchy" (concentration of power in the super-rich in the late 19th and early 20th century), and since the various rights movements, closer to true "democracy," with ever-encroaching hints at tyranny as our rights are gradually degraded.

Note that I don't necessarily agree with Plato completely, and the mapping is not exact. But his prized form of "aristocracy" (which is more like a meritocratic government founded on smart people) has really never been tried, outside of Star Trek perhaps.

Mancini wants quick solution to Tevez saga

MANCHESTER, England (AP) -Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has urged AC Milan to complete the permanent signing of Carlos Tevez within the next 10 days to prevent the transfer saga from dragging on throughout January.

The two clubs are in talks over the sale of the striker, who has been on an extended break in his native country Argentina since mid-November.

While Milan wants to bring in Tevez on loan with a view to signing him permanently at the end of the season, City is demanding an immediate sale.

Mancini says "we hope if Milan want to take him, we can close it in one week, 10 days."

Tevez hasn't played for City since being suspended for two weeks and fined a fortnight's wages for refusing to warm up during a Champions League game.

PFT: Jones says Garrett's job is safe

By all accounts, Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow behaves like a perfect gentleman, and the ideal teammate.? But before he became the starting quarterback in Denver, his reaction ? or, more accurately, his lack thereof ? to the placement of a billboard lobbying for him to become the starting quarterback prompted a definite response from the other quarterbacks on the team.

According to Jeff Darlington of NFL Network, the other quarterbacks began fining Tebow four days after the billboard appeared, due to his failure to speak out against the billboard.

Per Darlington, the reason never was articulated to Tebow.? Whether Tebow figured it out on his own isn?t known.? (Fans of rival SEC schools possibly would point to his Florida education and suggest that he didn?t make the mental connection.)? But the fines continued for six days, until Tebow became the starter.

Though not nearly as juicy or revealing as a locker room fight or a sideline blowup, it?s the first evidence of any frustration with Tebow from his teammates.? And it?s further proof of a passive-aggressive style that Tebow periodically displays, making his point without causing a ruckus.? Like when he evaded direct questions from Shannon Sharpe of CBS as to whether Tebow believes he enjoys the full support of the organization.

Right or wrong, Tebow?s fellow quarterbacks believed he should have expressed disagreement with the billboard, and that by failing to do so he necessarily approved of it.? And so, instead of responding to passive-aggression with more of the same, Kyle Orton and Brady Quinn opted to take the Tebow by the horns and punish him financially for failing to truly be the kind of teammates everyone presumes him to be.

While irrelevant now that Tebow is the starter, it?ll be interesting to see what happens if/when fans ever purchase a billboard calling for Tebow to be benched.

UPDATE 4:41 p.m. ET:? As several of you have pointed out, and as I had forgotten, Tebow said on September 15 that he?d rather the money spent on the billboard be donated to his charitable foundation.? ?Well, I guess I appreciate the support, you know, but we got people in charge here that we trust and [I] trust they?re going to do the right thing,? Tebow said.? Apparently, the fines arose not after the billboard that prompted Tebow?s September 15 comments was displayed, but after another billboard went up.

Sony PlayStation Vita sales fall sharply after Japanese launch (Digital Trends)

Mentioned by Bloomberg earlier today, sales of the PlayStation Vita have fallen by nearly 80 percent during the week that ended on December 25 according to tracking firm?Media Create. Sony sold approximately 325,000 Vita units on December 17 and 18, but only sold about 10,000 units a day during the following week. Sales of the PlayStation Portable beat sales of the PlayStation Vita by approximately 25,000 units. In addition, Nintendo saw massive sales of the 3DS during the same week and nearly sold half a million units. That pushes Nintendo over four million units sold for the entire year, a fact that Nintendo officials mentioned in a recent press release.?

PS-Vita-300x300 Analysts are pointing at the rise in popularity of smartphones and tablets as the cause of the Vita?s poor sales numbers.?The Wi-Fi model of the PlayStation Vita costs about $320 and the?3G/Wi-Fi model costs approximately $385 in Japan. The expensive pricing of the device is likely a stumbling block when it comes to a purchase decision. When the Sony handheld launches in the United States in?February, the?Wi-Fi model will be priced at $249 and the??3G/Wi-Fi model at $299. However, the Vita also requires the purchase of a?Sony memory card that starts at $20 for the 4GB size and ranges up to $100 for the 32GB card. Sony is also planning on selling a $40 ?starter kit? that includes a 4GB memory card,?screen cover, card case, cleaning cloth,?headphones and carry pouch.

With the recent price cut of the Nintendo 3DS, Sony may have a difficult time convincing consumers to purchase the more expensive Vita over the $169 3DS. However, the Vita is expected to launch with a lineup of 25 launch titles in the United States including Uncharted: Golden Abyss. Nintendo struggled initially on the 3DS with a lack of first party titles, but released Mario Kart 7 to please core Nintendo fans at the end of 2011.?
