After having the Sectional Meet cancelled because of the Blizzard of 2013, the Needham High boys swim team finished up the winter season at the State Championship Meet on Sunday at Harvard University by placing 14th?as a team.
The Rockets? top showing came from their 200-yard freestyle relay team and Ilie Tomac in the 100 breaststroke. Tomace came in sixth place in the state in the event with a time of 1:01.17. The senior also placed 15th?in the 200 individual medley and was part of a pair of strong relays performances.
Needham?s 200 free relay of junior Thomas Lively, sophomore Nathan Lai, senior James Yi, and junior Brendan Timmerman came in sixth overall with a time of 1:31.21. Other successful relays were the 200 medley unit of junior James Austin, Yi, Tomac, and sophomore Nathan Nast that finished 12th, and the 400 free relay of Lively, Tomac, sophomore Nathan Lai and Timmerman, that also finished 12th.
Other top 20 finishes for the Rockets included Lively, who was 13th in the 50 free, senior Matt Suarez taking 14th?in the 1-meter diving competition, Timmerman coming in 17th?in the 100 freestyle, and junior Richard Avrutsky placing 18th?in the 100 breaststroke.
Rounding out Needham?s day were: Timmerman (25th?in the 200 free), Austin (28th?in the 100 butterfly; 29th?in the 200 free), Yi (26th?in the 50 free; 33rd?in the 100 free), Lively (23rd?in the 100 butterfly), and Lai (34th in the 100 free).

Boys basketball
The Rockets were officially eliminated from receiving a state tournament berth with a 72-48 loss to a strong Andover team on Sunday night in the first round of the Acton-Boxboro Tournament.
Needham fell to 8-11 with the loss and closed the regular season on Tuesday night in the consolation game of the tournament against Acton-Boxboro.

Girls basketball
The girls improved to 11-8 with a 53-39 Bay State Conference win over Dedham last Thursday night.
Needham completed the regular season against first place Braintree on Wednesday before preparing for the upcoming state tournament, which should get under way early next week.

Boys hockey
The Rockets fell 4-0 at Coyle & Cassidy on Saturday to slip to 4-15-1 on the year.
Needham finishes the season at the Springfield Cathedral Tournament. The Rockets skated against the host Panthers on Wednesday night and end the winter campaign in the championship or consolation game on Thursday night against either St. Mary?s of Lynn or Malden Catholic.

Girls hockey
Needham lost a tough 3-2 game at Newton North?s Fessenden Rink on Monday to fall to 4-14-1. The Rockets traveled to Barnstable for their final game of the season on Wednesday.
